Creating defensible space around homes and businesses is one of the most effective ways residents can protect their property and help firefighters defend communities during a wildfire. The cleanup day encourages residents, property owners, and volunteers to work together to remove excess vegetation, clear debris, and reduce fuels that could contribute to wildfire spread.

The Tahoe City Firewise initiative is a community-driven effort led by the Tahoe City Downtown Association in collaboration with regional wildfire preparedness partners. The program focuses on education, community engagement, and practical actions that help make neighborhoods safer and more resilient to wildfire.

During the cleanup day, volunteers will assist with removing pine needles, trimming vegetation, and clearing other combustible materials that accumulate around homes, structures, and shared spaces. These small actions can make a significant difference in slowing the spread of wildfire and improving overall community safety.

The Defensible Space Cleanup Day is also an opportunity for residents to learn more about Firewise practices, meet neighbors, and take part in the collective effort to protect Tahoe City from wildfire threats.

Residents, property owners, and volunteers interested in participating are encouraged to join the cleanup and support Tahoe City’s effort to become a recognized Firewise Community. We’ll have more details after our April 20 meeting.
