“The Mountains are Pretty” is a folk opera written and produced by local poet/playwright Kurt Beckering, under the pen name Kurtis Maximus.
Set in a mythical forest, this unforgivingly original show revolts against the human condition with passion, eroticism, and humor.
Through the vision of choreographer Leah Pivirotto, and in collaboration with the Tahoe Flow Arts Studio, “The Mountains are Pretty” spins a dark, twisted tale of a miner who falls into despair. The story comes to life through the magic of folk music, storytelling, dance, and aerial arts.
Prepare to be delighted, as an outrageous cast of characters take you on a journey into the depths of humanity, framed within a uniquely original alternate world, where nothing is as it appears. Immortality reigns in this no-holds barred drama, that will leave you laughing throughout, while simultaneously in awe of the death-defying aerial choreography, Each turn of events will leave you wondering what could happen next, and who in the world could possibly have thought this up.
Stringed instruments from a live band create the mood as our protagonist muddles his way through the mythical forest, finding himself entangled with creatures of all kinds, where he is ultimately forced to confront the reality of his own existence. The band is made up of musicians from local Tahoe bands, Sneaky Creatures, No Deal, the Innapropriators, and Kandy from Metal Echo.
The Tahoe Art Haus will be hosting these two premiere shows, on Saturday, March 2nd at 8pm/doors at 7pm,
and a matinee on Sunday, March 3rd at 2pm/doors at 1pm. All ticket sales will be through the Art Haus website, or at the theater itself.
All tickets will be $30.
Ten years in the making, this full-scale production is completely locally-born. Everyone involved lives here in the Lake Tahoe/Truckee area. All funds collected from these shows will be allocated for the advancement of the performing arts in our community. The proceeds for these two shows will be directly donated to the purchasing of sound and lighting gear for this and further productions which will allow for continued, home-grown, works of performance art, with a commitment to collaborations of all kinds.
