dt.common.streams.StreamServerLake Tahoe Dance Collective is pleased to present Kinetech Arts in “The Other Sight,” a dance theater piece that combining contemporary performance and interactive technology.

The performance, which explores surveillance in today’s tech-savvy society, will also feature a short film, Q-and-A session with artists and technologists, and a chance for the audience to interact with Kinetech’s technology in the performance space.

The Other Sight is a multifaceted collage of situations inspired by personal anecdotes, images, beliefs and current events that concern all of us. The Edward Snowden affair, social media tracking, and the TSA, controversy over immigration inspire heated arguments on human rights, privacy, and freedom.

What are we watching? Others? Ourselves? How does surveillance affect our psyche and our bodies? Is technology bringing us freedom or slavery?

The work was developed as part of the Resident Artists Workshop at KUNST-STOFF arts, choreographed by Daiane Lopes da Silva in collaboration with the dancers; technology by Weidong Yang; visual art by Raymond Larrett; and dancers: Daiane Lopes da Silva, Irene Hsiao, Qinmin Liu, Priscilla Park, Diane Mateo and Rebecca Rose Robinson-Leviton.

Kinetech Arts is the first presentation of a guest company by the newly-formed Lake Tahoe Dance Collective, the evolution of what started as Tahoe Youth Ballet in 2009 by Christin Hanna.

It also marks the first dance presentation at Tahoe City’s newest venue, the Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema, in downtown Tahoe City.

ABOUT KINETECH ARTS

Kinetech Arts’ works combine the knowledge of artists and scientists to produce aesthetic experiences at the limits of innovation and imagination. The company was founded by Weidong Yang and Daiane Lopes da Silva, in January 2013, in San Francisco.

The company’s work includes dance performances that interact with technology using open-source code, scientific theory, and the inventions of the company’s engineers.

“We believe in the power of collective creativity,” explains da Silva, “throughout our weekly open lab, we provide a safe environment for dancers, choreographers, visual designers, technologists and curious minds to exchange information, play, and create new projects that are empowering and innovative.”

Daiane Lopes da Silva is a dancer, choreographer and the artistic director of Kinetech Arts. Her work has been performed in Brazil, France, Belgium and the U.S.A. In Portugal, she worked with Lisbon Dance Company, Almada Dance Company, and DancArte.

In the Bay Area, Daiane performed with Labayen Dance, KUNST-STOFF Dance Company, Copious Dance Theatre, Mudita Arts for Peace, and Robert Moses’ Kin. Her residencies include RAW at The Garage, RAD at KUNST-STOFF arts, and Marin Headlands Center for the Arts.

Weidong Yang has indulged in the fields of science (with a Ph.D in physics and MCS computer science, eleven U.S. patents, 20-plus peer reviewed publications), dance, photography, and Taiji.

Having grown up in China and received high education in the U.S., he has experienced two drastically different cultures. Kinetech demands him to tap into all these past experiences.

Weidong envisions Kinetech Arts to be a place for synergy of art and technology, as well as for people with vast different background and training, working together creatively, making beauty that is beyond what’s possible by a single person. Aside from Kinetech Arts, Weidong also enjoys his work as data scientist at Kineviz.
