Autumn is here and is one of our favorite times of the year in Tahoe City as the “Scarecrows on Parade” make a return to our downtown.  Each year we enjoy the funny, scary, witty, and whimsical masterpieces created by merchants and students alike and this year would like to invite our community members to join in the Harvest time fun by making a scarecrow to display in town.  Due to Covid-19, this year the classrooms will not be making scarecrows but we would still love to see the town lined with festive and creative scarecrows made by the community.

If you want to make a scarecrow for our town, here are the requirements:

–  The scarecrow must be life-size or smaller.
– He/She must be built on a stand (think Christmas tree stand or better).
– He/She must be in good taste (this is a family-friendly event).
– Family Scarecrows should be delivered to Tahoe City and displayed at a business that is willing to host a scarecrow.
– Business Scarecrows should be placed in front of business the first week of October
– The scarecrows will be on display the entire month of October.
– Please place a sign on the scarecrow or include its name as part of the costume.
– Scarecrows must be well built to withstand the elements. Please attach each piece to the stand.  (One year many scarecrows’ pants fell down).
– If you would like to keep your scarecrow or any items on the scarecrow, please retrieve your scarecrow by November 3rd.

While 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, we hope to bring some fun to our downtown this fall with the return of the scarecrows. Once scarecrows are placed, we will create a ballot for the community to select their favorite scarecrow.  Below are some photos of prior year favorites.  Please join the Tahoe City Downtown Association and the community as we celebrate Fall. We look forward to your participation. If you have any questions about the scarecrows, please contact [email protected] or (530)583-3348.

We also wanted to let everyone know that due to the COVID-19 pandemic we have canceled our annual Tahoe City Oktoberfest event.  To make up for that loss we have created a fun new event, The Tahoe City Explorathon, a month-long digital activity challenge event that will take place from September 19 through October 18, 2020.  You can join anytime! This family-friendly event is designed to engage the community, encourage “backyard” exploration, and generate support for local businesses.  Find out more on our website, www.visittahoecity.org/explorathon/.
