The fun-filled family concert, BIG BLUEgrass is back! On Friday, August 4, three talented bands from northern California will perform live music, with Lake Tahoe in the background. The opening act is by Truckee School of Music. The concert lineup includes Josh Brough String Band (a local band), Broken Compass Bluegrass (a young talented group that will get all on their feet to dance), and Ismay (who has ties to the Hellman family). The event will be held at Sugar Pine Point State Park, 7595 HWY 89, Tahoma CA; doors open at 4 pm, the concert starts at 5 pm and goes until 8 pm. Tickets are $40 with youth pricing and VIP available. Skip the line and pre-order tickets here: https://sierrastateparks.org/event/big-bluegrass-benefit-concert/. Park parking is $10.
A truly unique venue, with natural acoustics and an amazing sunset view of the lake, BIG BLUEgrass has become a West Shore tradition. Emcee Mike Stefansson from Nevada Sports Network will keep the event moving, and the Tahoe Truckee School of Music will provide the sound and lighting, as a learning experience for their students. “Tahoe Truckee School of Music is proud to partner with the Sierra State Parks Foundation; it’s made for the community by the community, a love story bringing people to the parks through a common passion for music,” says Ben Martin, founder, and Executive Director of the non-profit Tahoe Truckee School of Music.
BIG BLUEgrass began as an acoustic-style bluegrass event with a nod to Warren Hellman, the great-grandson of I.W. Hellman who built the mansion the concert venue resides but is also, the founder of the Hardly Strictly music festival in San Francisco but has evolved to feature a wide range of acts from folk, bluegrass, country and western, and even rock ‘n roll genres. To add to the fun, there will be food and dessert for sale by Big Blue Q. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. beer and Highway 12 wine will be for sale for those of legal drinking age.
This is a benefit put on by the Sierra State Parks Foundation, and all proceeds go to restoration projects and educational programming to support the CA State Parks. “Parks need your support now more than ever,” said Heidi Doyle, Sierra State Park Foundation Executive Director. “Big BLUEgrass is one way to have a great time at the lake while giving back to the parks that we all enjoy, year-round.”
